The primary material for bronze statues is bronze-an alloy composed mainly of copper, with tin being the most common additive element. Copper offers excellent ductility and corrosion resistance, ensuring a degree of toughness in the material; the addition of tin enhances the alloy's hardness, strength, and castability, making it particularly suitable for crafting intricate statues. Molten bronze possesses good fluidity, allowing it to flow into the finest details of a mold-such as facial features, clothing folds, hair, and decorative patterns-thereby rendering them with remarkable clarity.

Bronze statues may also contain trace amounts of other elements, such as lead, zinc, and iron. These compositions are not uniform across all bronze statues but vary depending on the era of creation, region, craftsmanship, and specific requirements. For instance, adding a small amount of lead improves the fluidity of the molten bronze, facilitating the casting process, while elements like zinc can influence the alloy's properties and color. Consequently, it is rarely possible to define all bronze statues by a single, fixed formula; different alloy recipes result in variations regarding hardness, color, weight, and workability.

Another notable characteristic of bronze is that its surface undergoes natural changes over time. Upon exposure to air and moisture, the metal gradually oxidizes and corrodes, forming a new surface layer-commonly known as "patina" or a "rust layer." As a result, the surfaces of ancient bronze statues may display various hues, such as green, blue-grey, or dark brown; these changes depend not only on the material itself but also on environmental factors and preservation conditions. Thanks to its exceptional durability and its ability to capture complex forms and fine details through casting, bronze has long been a preferred material for creating statues, vessels, and monumental artworks.
