The production process for gallery sculptures varies depending on the material, size, and design, but the fundamental workflow typically encompasses conceptual design, model making, fabrication, surface finishing, and quality inspection. Initially, the artist creates a design draft based on the theme and creative concept, establishing the sculpture's overall form, dimensions, materials, and mode of expression. Subsequently, a clay maquette or digital model is produced to refine proportions, details, and spatial effects, serving as the foundation for further fabrication.
When using metals such as bronze, the process generally involves mold making, wax modeling, casting, assembly, and grinding. Taking the lost-wax casting method as an example: a wax model is created from the original prototype, a heat-resistant mold is formed around it, molten bronze is poured into the cavity, and the casting is retrieved after cooling. Large sculptures are often cast in multiple sections, which are then joined via welding or mechanical connections, followed by the finishing of seams and surfaces.
Production methods differ according to the material used. Resin sculptures typically employ mold casting or molding techniques; glass sculptures require processes such as hot working, cold working, or casting; and ceramic works undergo shaping, drying, glazing, and firing. Modern sculpture production may also incorporate technologies like 3D scanning, digital modeling, and 3D printing to enhance precision when crafting complex forms.
Surface finishing-which may include grinding, polishing, coloring, antiquing, or applying protective coatings-ensures the sculpture achieves the desired color and texture. Quality inspection focuses on dimensions, form, surface defects, connection points, and overall structural stability. Finally, the sculpture undergoes packaging, transport, and installation, resulting in a finished artwork ready for gallery display.
